Sheffield Wednesday beat Barnsley to secure their first win in three months and give new boss Alan Irvine a victory in his first game in charge.
Irvine, installed as Owls boss on 8 January saw first-half goals from Tommy Spurr and Jermaine Johnson settle an absorbing South Yorkshire derby.
Emil Hallfredsson had grabbed a fortuitous equaliser for the Tykes between the two Wednesday goals.
Despite the win, their first in 12, the Owls remain in the relegation zone.
Not since a 2-1 home win over Coventry on 17 October had Wednesday collected three points in a dire run that ultimately cost previous manager Brian Laws his job.
Irvine succeeded Laws just ten days after being sacked as Preston boss and he was given the perfect start at Oakwell when Spurr opened the scoring in the third minute.
Michael Gray swung over a cross and after Barnsley keeper Luke Steele failed to gather, Spurr swivelled and fired home from close range.
However, just four minutes later the home side were level.
Carl Dickinson played the ball back to Hallfredsson on the left edge of the visitors' penalty area and the Iceland international's cross curled over stranded Owls goalkeeper Lee Grant into the far corner.
Wednesday regained the lead midway through the half when Johnson raced on to Marcus Tudgay's headed pass and lashed home a stunning angled volley from just inside the area.
The second half, whilst hard-fought, was not as eventful as the first and Wednesday were able to hold on to claim victory.
The Owls are 22nd in the Championship on 22 points, a point behind Reading but with a game in hand on the Royals.
Barnsley manager Mark Robins:
"It was a typical derby game. There was a lot of passion and a lot of commitment and endeavour.
"But sometimes there wasn't enough control or skill from both sides.
"We shot ourselves in the foot too many times. We got ourselves back into the game with a rather fortunate goal and conceded two poor goals which puts you on the back foot.
"We had more possession in the second half, threw everything at them and didn't really deserve to lose the game."
Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine:
"It was a great start, absolutely terrific. It was a great performance by the lads, great application - but it's only a start.
"If they feel as if that's it and everything's going to be ok from now, then we'll end up having problems.
"They've set the benchmark in terms of how they need to go about games and it's up to us to make sure we don't fall below those levels of commitment and determination."
