West Brom   2 - 0   Peterborough

West Brom v Peterborough

West Brom 2-0 Peterborough

West Brom won for the first time in four games as they beat basement club Peterborough to get their promotion hopes back on track.

It took the Baggies an hour to break Peterborough's resolve with striker Luke Moore firing in a shot from the edge of the area to put them in front.

Posh defender Ryan Bennett headed into his own net to add to Albion's lead.

The victory leaves the Baggies eight points behind Championship leaders Newcastle with a game in hand.

The hosts dominated for much of the first half with Jerome Thomas going close with a volley and right-back Gianni Zuiverloon blazing his shot wildly over the bar.

West Brom were desperate for a goal having been jeered off at the break and Abdoulaye Meite wasted a great chance but his header sailed off target from a Chris Brunt corner.

They did not have to wait long for the opener and Graham Dorrans went on a dazzling run to set up Moore whose shot found its way into the net thanks to a deflection.

It was a big blow for the visitors and the lead was soon doubled when Dorrans fired a shot into the ground to see the unlucky Bennett nod into his own net.

The Posh fought back and Shaun Batt's 25-yard shot flew just wide but Roberto Di Matteo's side comfortably held on.

West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo:
"I told the players to stay patient because it is important to stick to your game plan.

"But I also had to raise my voice a little bit because I disagreed with how we played in the first half. When it is needed I can do that.

"We were slow in the first half and there wasn't much movement. We didn't penetrate the Peterborough defence enough.

"We increased the tempo in the second-half and managed to score two goals and I think we deserved to win.

Peterborough manager Mark Cooper:

"We just caved in which is the disappointing thing for me.

"We were pretty comfortable for an hour. But it is becoming a bit of a trait now that when we come under a bit of pressure we concede, not just one, but two very quickly.

"It is something that needs addressing. We gifted West Brom two goals.

"We have to stand up, roll our sleeves up and see it through until the pressure comes to an end."
