Newcastle ended Swansea's 11-match unbeaten run as the Championship leaders brushed aside their visitors.

Three headed goals in the first half-hour, two from on-loan striker Marlon Harewood, set the Magpies on their way.

Harewood claimed the first and third, first pouncing when Swansea only half-cleared a corner and then converting Peter Lovenkrands' whipped cross.

Lovenkrands had scored the second from close range after good work from Jonas Gutierrez down the left wing.

Magpies goalkeeper Steve Harper had to pull off fine saves from Cedric van der Gun and Andrea Orlandi to preserve his clean sheet.

Harper's second-half replacement, Tim Krul, had to keep out Nathan Dyer's effort and an injury time pile-driver from defender Angel Rangel as the visitors enjoyed long periods of possession.

But the Swans were not as clinical as the Magpies and it was they who eased to victory in front of a crowd of 42,616.

Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton:
"I asked for a high-tempo start and after half an hour I was delighted - I couldn't have asked for any more.

"To get three goals in that period was tremendous and it has won us the game.

"It would have been nice to add a couple more, of course, but take nothing away from Swansea, they're a side in form and we were never going to get it all our own way.

"All we can do is continue to do what we are doing and be hopeful that the other results go for us."

Swansea City manager Paulo Sousa:
"We deserved much more than this, we started afraid and we conceded twice from counter-attacks.

Swans boss rues counter-attacks

"But we made some corrections before half-time and then in the second half we had better control of the game.

"But this is Newcastle, it's very difficult for anyone to catch them. West Brom have a great squad... but I think Newcastle have more claims on the Championship."
