QPR moved up to fourth in the Championship thanks to Kaspars Gorkss's 82nd-minute winner at Hillsborough.
Jay Simpson put the visitors ahead after only 10 minutes with a cool left-footed finish from Adel Taarabt's pass.
But the Owls levelled three minutes later when Jermaine Johnson converted Darren Potter's teasing cross.
Both sides hit the woodwork in search of a winner before Gorkss's near-post header from Alejandro Faurlin's corner was enough to clinch victory for QPR.
It was a fourth away win in six matches for Jim Magilton's men.
QPR started brightly, and it was no surprise when Simpson latched on to a neat through-ball from Taarabt before driving his shot beyond Lee Grant.
Wednesday almost conceded a second two minutes later when Wayne Routledge found space in the area and fired against the upright.
However, the hosts drew level when Potter's cross found Johnson and the Jamaica international's shot sneaked into the far corner.
Luke Varney almost put the Owls ahead in the 24th minute following a fine solo run, but Radek Cerny managed to get a hand to his shot and tip it on to the near post.
The lively Johnson tested Cerny again five minutes after the interval, and Potter curled a free-kick narrowly over the bar as Wednesday enjoyed a prolonged spell of pressure.
Rangers were finding it difficult to stem the tide, but Simpson then created space for himself with a delightful piece of skill, but his shot was comfortably pouched by Grant.
The Owls responded by striking the woodwork for a second time in the 64th minute - Tommy Miller the luckless player on this occasion as his powerful 20-yarder rebounded off the post.
But it was left to Gorkss to have the final say as he nodded home substitute Faurlin's corner to secure victory for the west Londoners.
Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws: "We did enough to win, but football can be cruel at times.
"After we scored a great goal I thought we were in control of the game.
"We feel like we've had our pockets pinched."
Queens Park Rangers manager Jim Magilton: "It was a real test of grit and determination so it's a nice win for us.
"We knew we were going to be under the cosh.
"I thought Sheffield Wednesday really pressed and they deservedly got back on track.
"We've been praised for playing expansive football this season so it was good to see us have to dig in and battle.
"We're still very much a work in progress."
