Plymouth   2 - 1   Doncaster

Plymouth 2-1 Doncaster

Plymouth 2-1 Doncaster

Plymouth escaped the drop zone with a battling win over 10-man Doncaster.

Alan Judge converted Alan Gow's cross for the Pilgrims with 26 minutes gone, but Dean Shiels immediately pegged them back with a rebound from a free kick.

Rovers' Martin Woods was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Kari Arnason, but James Coppinger then forced a good save from Romain Larrieu.

Rory Fallon finished well after Jamie Mackie's shot had been saved to earn Plymouth the win with 19 minutes left.

Plymouth looked superb at the start of the second half and should have had the game wrapped up sooner, especially once Woods had departed.

But Doncaster battled well throughout, with John Oster dragging a shot wide from the edge of the box before Billy Sharp also went close.

Doncaster pressed for an equaliser after Fallon had restored Plymouth's lead, but were unable to find a way through.

Sturrock praises Argyle attitude

Plymouth boss Paul Sturrock:
"Doncaster are a difficult team to play against, difficult to break down.

"If you go out of shape against them you lose, which has happened to us before.

"I thought we were very disciplined. It was always going to be a tight game, and I did feel that the chances we created meant we slightly shaded it as far as the result was concerned."

Doncaster boss Sean O'Driscoll:
"Going down to 10 men is not a reason to throw in the towel, it just makes it that little more difficult.

"Our game plan didn't change and what we tried to do - win the match - didn't change.

"We came in at half-time and we thought if we could step it up a little bit we could win the game.

"Even with 10 men we thought we could get something from it, and we had one or two good chances.
