West Brom   5 - 0   Watford

West Brom 5-0 Watford

West Brom 5-0 Watford

West Brom went back to the top of the Championship with a clinical demolition of Watford at The Hawthorns.

They took an early lead when Jonas Olsson headed in Graham Dorrans' free-kick before Adrian Mariappa fouled Luke Moore and Dorrans scored from the spot.

Mariappa nodded over and Danny Graham drilled wide for Watford, Moore then tapping in after his shot was saved.

Gianni Zuiverloon slammed in from 20 yards and Simon Cox lashed in from even further out to complete the rout.

With Newcastle not in action until Monday it meant West Brom go top of the league, despite only having won one of their previous six league games.

They had not scored in four of those six matches, but boss Roberto Di Matteo's extra shooting sessions during the week clearly paid dividends.

Watford had gone six games unbeaten away from home, but they never looked like maintaining that record as they went 2-0 down within 18 minutes.

Nathan Ellington had a late header tipped around the post, but it was a thoroughly miserable afternoon for Malky Mackay's men.

West Brom manager Roberto Di Matteo:

"It is amazing we get all this criticism for not scoring in two games. We are still up there with the top scorers.

"It is a very tough division and it seems to me that people expect us to be 10 points ahead of everyone else.

"I would rather win five games 1-0 rather than one game 5-0."

Watford manager Malky Mackay:

"We have got to do the basics properly. If we do that we can be competitive.

"They are a young group and they have got to learn and learn quickly.

"The players are disappointed as they had been on a great run and playing well but it is something they will learn from."
