Striker Craig Beattie roars with delight after his goal earns Swansea victory at former club West Brom

Craig Beattie returned to haunt former club West Bromwich Albion as Swansea City shocked the Championship leaders.

The Scottish striker latched onto Mark Gower's pass to smash left-footed past Baggies keeper Scott Carson in the 50th minute to seal a smash-and-grab raid.

Nathan Dyer, Ashley Williams and Tom Butler all went close for Swansea, who are now unbeaten in seven games.

Chris Wood and Simon Cox missed good chances for West Brom, who remain top despite this 1-0 loss at the Hawthorns.

West Brom dominated territory and possession early on but the resilient visitors showed why they boast the second meanest defence in the Championship as they restricted the Baggies to long-range efforts.

Roberto Di Matteo's men felt they should have had a 20th-minute penalty when Swans centre-back Alan Tate fouled Jerome Thomas inside the box as the former Arsenal youngster cut inside from the left flank, only for referee Andy D'Urso to wave away the protests.

Yet despite being under incessant pressure, Paulo Sousa's team should have led at the interval.

Beattie failed to convert Dyer's wicked low cut-back in the 21st minute before the roles were reversed 10 minutes later, when Albion keeper Carson made a superb point-blank stop from Dyer after Beattie's driven cross.

Carson again had to be at his best to prevent Williams heading in his third of the season from Gower's corner, as the Wales defender looked to punish the club that released him as a teenager.

Chris Wood, though, should have put the hosts in front but, wriggling free from Tate's clutches, the West Brom striker could not keep Gianni Zuiverloon's in-swinging left-wing cross down as he volleyed over.

Cedric van der Gun, meanwhile, had another great chance to give Swansea the lead when he ran onto Gower's incisive through-pass.

But instead of shooting first-time when Carson was off balance, the Dutch winger delayed his shot before firing high and wide.

However, within four-and-a-half minutes of the restart Beattie came back to remind his old club why they once paid more than £1m for him as the former Celtic frontman fired Gower's defence-splitting ball under Carson with his left foot.

The Scottish striker endured a disappointing two years at the Hawthorns but Swansea's record signing drilled home his second goal in successive away games to repay some of the £800,000 transfer fee that Swans boss Paulo Sousa paid for him in the summer.

The Swans were keeping the rampant Baggies at arm's length until substitute Simon Cox almost scored with his first touch with a quarter-of-an-hour remaining.

But West Brom's summer signing dragged Youssouf Mulumbu's excellent through-pass across Dorus de Vries' goal and wide.

While the home team pushed on desperate to rescue something from this game, de Vries hardly had a save to make as the Swans held firm.

Sousa's counter-attacking game plan almost paid dividends late on as substitute Butler could have sealed victory beyond all doubt with four minutes remaining but his shot, after being put though one-on-one by Joe Allen, was superbly tipped onto the post and wide by Carson.

The Swans survived a late scare as Wood headed wide, but held on to secure their second away win of the season - and second in 13 visits to the Hawthorns - as the Welshmen enjoyed their seventh clean sheet this term.

The Baggies were booed off at the final whistle but, due to second-placed Newcastle United's 2-1 defeat at Scunthorpe United, the Midlanders remain at the summit of the Championship table on goals scored.

Interview: Swansea City manager Paulo Sousa

Swansea manager Paulo Sousa:

"It is a very important win for us against a side that are top of the table, who will win promotion at the end of the season I'm sure.

"We deserved the win and it reinforces the confidence we have in ourselves and in our work.

"We deserved the win because we keep working very hard, believing in ourselves and the results are coming more often."

West Bromwich Albion assistant Eddie Newton:
"We know what Craig [Beattie] can do, we told the boys what he possesses - the negatives and the positives.

"And we got hit on the sucker punch, a little bit of naivety and we got punished for it.

"It just seems, at present, it takes a goal against us before we start really kicking into gear.

"It's something we are trying to tackle but it takes time. It's not always as easy as that."
