Cardiff   1 - 1   Crystal Palace

Cardiff City v Crystal Palace

Cardiff 1-1 Crystal Palace

Cardiff and Crystal Palace fought out a scrappy draw at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Palace took the lead after eight minutes when Alan Lee's downward header across goal was turned into his own net by former Palace defender Mark Hudson.

But Cardiff were back in it 11 minutes later against the run of play through Peter Whittingham's close-range finish past Julian Speroni.

The second half failed to come to life with neither keeper really tested.

Cardiff had been scoring goals for fun before the international break but there was little sign of a repeat.

They could have added a second after confusion in the Palace defence, but Speroni was able to smother the ball at the feet of top goal scorer Michael Chopra.

Speroni later denied Whittingham his second of the afternoon with a header, before Chris Burke shot straight at the Argentine with another effort.

Cardiff could have been caught out themselves when a ball was sent over a static Bluebirds defence to Freddie Sears but he was unable to do anything with it.

The second half was lacklustre and niggly, with neither side deserving to take all three points.

Both sides seemed to have grievances to air and tempers flared at the end, with Chopra and Shaun Derry at the heart of the fracas.

Players were dragged apart only for the feud to reignite in the tunnel as the players left the field.

Cardiff City manager Dave Jones:
"I'd think we might have gone on to win it. Palace are a big side but we showed determination to come back after that early goal.

"I felt we had enough opportunities to have got more out of the game but we're not a physical side and the referee never made the important decisions when he was supposed to.

"I don't know whether he will include the spat at the end of the game because I have no wish to talk to him."

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock:

"If any punches were thrown, they would probably have missed.

"I was very pleased with the performance. They didn't deserve to beat us. And I was disappointed we didn't win as we had a few chances.

"It is very difficult playing here as Cardiff are a very good side but we didn't lay down and they had to earn everything against us."
