Preston   0 - 0   West Brom

Preston v West Brom

Preston 0-0 West Brom

West Brom ended a sequence of three league and cup defeats to remain in second place in the Championship after a hard-earned draw at Preston.

Andy Lonergan deflected a Graham Dorrans shot on to the post as Albion attacked while Billy Jones headed wide for Preston during a poor first half.

Neil Mellor went close for North End with a near-post header, while Joe Mattock cleared another Jones header.

Lonergan saved another powerful strike and a header late on from Dorrans.

North End had lost three of their last five league and cup games while the Baggies' form had deserted them following their 5-0 win at Middlesbrough.

And a draw at Deepdale was probably a fair result after a game of relatively few clear openings - although the goalscoring concerns remain for Baggies boss Roberto Di Matteo with just one goal now in West Brom's last four games.

606: DEBATE

The match was played in extremely blustery conditions and, despite plenty of industry and endeavour, there was little to warm the supporters in the opening half.

Dorrans almost broke the deadlock after his surging run culminated with a decent strike but North End keeper Lonergan managed to deflect the ball on to the post.

A rare flowing move from Albion later in the half ended with Dorrans disappointingly shooting wide, while a Chris Brunt header missed the target.

Preston, who had scored in every game this season, showed precious little in the final third, although Jones should have headed his side in front in injury-time after connecting with a superb free-kick but his glancing effort flew wide.

North End upped the tempo after the restart and space opened up for Mellor but the striker's shot lacked power and Scott Carson saved.

Roman Bedner for Albion and North End's Mellor both had penalty appeals waved away while another inviting opening fell to Jones. He was unmarked from a corner but his header lacked power and Mattock cleared.

Mellor then went within inches of an opening goal with his near-post header, while Lonergan made a superb one-handed save after Dorrans again twisted this way and that before shooting.

Dorrans was extremely impressive and it was the winger who almost snatched victory with an injury-time header but Lonergan thwarted him for the third time with a diving stop.

Preston boss Alan Irvine (on the West Brom manager's position): "I was offered the job - simple as that. I am telling you I was offered the job and didn't take it.

"I don't think either team did enough to win or lose the game and it was a fair result.

"Keeper Andy Lonergan wasn't called upon to make too many saves but the ones he did make were important."

West Brom boss Roberto Di Matteo: "We had a bad week, which is a long time in football, but we are still OK.

"Maybe the good start we had at the beginning of the season gave the public a different level of expectation.

"We know how hard it is to win. We had the chances to win this game but Lady Luck wasn't on our side."
