Sheff Wed   3 - 1   Cardiff

Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 Cardiff

Sheffield Wednesday 3-1 Cardiff

Etienne Esajas curled in an early free kick and went on to inspire Sheffield Wednesday to victory over Cardiff.

Peter Whittingham equalised with a penalty won by Michael Chopra and City had two goals disallowed for offside.

But at the start of the second period a superb Esajas cross found Luke Varney who headed in from close range.

Cardiff saw Joe Ledley sent off for a second yellow, substitute Leon Clarke completing the rout with a fine left-footed volley off Esajas' deep cross.

The victory ended a two-game losing streak for the Owls and deepened Cardiff's antipathy for a Hillsborough ground where they saw their play-off dreams ended in the final game of last season.

The Bluebirds have now lost four of their last five Championship matches and have dropped out of the top six.

Errors at the back did not help them, Mark Hudson fouling Varney ahead of the opening goal and David Marshall seemingly stranded on the line as Esajas found the mark with the help of a post.

The Scotland international keeper was again at fault as Richard Wood blew a great chance to bury a header from Michael Gray's cross.

But the Bluebirds rallied, Jay Bothroyd and Whittingham combining for the latter to feed Chopra, who got a touch ahead of Lee Grant, the Owls keeper bringing him down for the penalty.

Whittingham struck an excellent left-footer past Grant, the visitors' upsurge leading to disallowed strikes from Bothroyd and Chopra.

But Dutch winger Esajas turned provider for Varney to net the 50th goal of his Sheffield Wednesday career, the defence allowing him too much space and Marshall stranded on the line.

After Ledley saw red for a rash challenge on Gray - his second bookable offence - there was no denying the home side.

Esajas, returning to the Owls' starting XI following his sterling substitute role in last week's derby defeat to Sheffield United, set up Clarke who made no mistake from short range.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws:

"I thought Esajas was very, very good today no doubt about that.

"He's been waiting for quite a while to get his opportunity and has probably been a bit frustrated, so I said 'You've earned the right and don't spoil it by trying to be clever'.

"And you can't ask for any more than that, he's contributed to two goals and scored one himself.

"The one thing that has been the down side for Etienne has been not just his consistency but his injuries.

"But certainly he was exceptionally good."

Interview: Cardiff manager Dave Jones

Cardiff manager Dave Jones:

"We can't grumble about not winning a football match because we didn't do enough in the second half.

"We've got to be better and at the moment we're inconsistent, we'll have a good game, bad game and it's costing us.

"We've got a soft spot in us at the moment and the goals that we've given away in the second half are goals that can be stopped quite easily if players are going to do what's asked of them.

"But at this moment in time they're not doing it and that's the frustrating part.

"Everybody's going on about time added on in injury time but the bigger issue is getting the decisions right.

"[Michael Chopra's] goal is a goal, he's not offside. It's as simple as that and I've been done and I've been done on Wednesday.

"I think Joe has been punished harshly because his first tackle was a good tackle.

"Again, it's a wrong decision from them."

Brian Laws added: "I've got to say I thought [Cardiff] were very unfortunate not to get a goal as I thought Chopra's was actually onside if truth be known."
