Sheff Utd   3 - 2   Sheff Wed

Sheffield United v Sheffield Wednesday

Sheff Utd 3-2 Sheff Wed

By Mark Ashenden

Sheffield United survived a second-half fightback from Sheffield Wednesday to win a thrilling Steel City derby.

A Chris Morgan header set up Jamie Ward to fire in the opener, with Darius Henderson poking in a Ched Evans shot.

Lewis Buxton headed into his own net for the third but Marcus Tudgay pulled one back with a stunning volley.

Substitute Etienne Esajas set up a tense finale scoring a fizzing free-kick, but the Blades held on as skipper Morgan went close with two headers.

The Blades began the 124th Steel City derby desperate for revenge after Wednesday did the double over them last season for the first time in 95 years with boss Kevin Blackwell promising "pride and determination".

The home fans could not have dreamed of a better start with their opening goal after just six minutes having already seen new signing Andrew Davies getting booked and having a header tipped over the bar.

With the sleepy defenders still adjusting to the noise of Bramall Lane, the resulting corner by Keith Treacy was brilliantly nodded down by Morgan for Ward, making his 100th career league start, to turn smartly from three yards and fire in his fourth in seven games.

Luke Varney and Darren Potter both shot tamely as the visitors piled forward, but former Watford striker Henderson soon doubled the lead, stabbing in after Evans had fired across the goal.

The 26-year-old Tudgay continued to threaten and his header was well saved by Mark Bunn but the luckless Wednesday found themselves three down just before the break.

David Cotterill - a replacement for Ward, who was stretchered off - looped in a cross from the right and the panicked Buxton planted a header agonisingly into the top corner of his own net.

It must have been a miserable interval for the Owls, but on came a dazzling Dutchman who got them right back into the match within a minute of the restart.

Etienne Esajas
Dutchman Etienne Esajas was a second-half star for the Owls

Winger Etienne Esajas caused havoc with a fine run and the ball fell to Tudgay who volleyed in a cracker from the edge of the box.

The hosts looked rattled and Wednesday took full advantage after a careless foul on Richard Wood by Cotterill.

Esajas casually strolled up and crashed in the free-kick from 25 yards that stayed low and dipped inside Bunn's right post.

With 25 nervous minutes remaining, the whole of Bramall Lane - bar 3,000 very noisy supporters draped in blue - must have feared the worst but the Blades survived with few other scares.

Their skipper Morgan was an inspiration at the back for United and only a miraculous save from Lee Grant denied him late on when he went close with a header.

The game continued to flow in scintillating fashion but it was a relieved red half of the city that returned home jubilant.

Sheffield United boss Kevin Blackwell:

"At least we've got the bragging rights until March - but what a game!

"I told the players to expect a backlash at half-time. We're there for the viewers and it made it a great game!

"As great a season as we had last season, many locals dismissed it because we lost twice to Wednesday, so it was a massive, massive victory.

"I had 10 new players who had never experienced a Sheffield derby. They now know what it's like. I'm delighted to get such a big result."

Sheffield Wednesday manager Brian Laws:

"It was tough to take. We've not been reactive to the second ball for the goals. The second half was magnificent and if we were anything like that in the first half we would have won.

"I wanted some pride back in the second half and they've given me that. I can at least look our supporters in the eye, and say we gave it a go.

"But I blame myself because you've got to pick the right team. We had three games in six days and maybe I needed to change a few more players.

"Etienne had been in our thoughts and we wondered if this was the game for him, but Jermaine Johnson was poor tonight. He was ineffective."
