Bottom-club Plymouth's poor start to the season continued as Watford left Home Park with a win.

Tom Cleverley struck after just four minutes when he swept in a cross from Don Cowie via Gary Sawyer's outstretched boot.

Henri Lansbury's powerful strike for Watford hit the woodwork, while Plymouth were denied an equaliser when Karl Duguid's header struck a post.

That was the closest Plymouth came as they lost a fifth game on the trot.

Sturrock frustrated by missed chances

"I am heartfelt sorry for the team but we are creating chances so that gives me real hope.

"I could see we have still got a spirit within the team - and that's vital.

"The positives are there and now we need a settled back four to stop the nerves at the back. We're looking all right and I'm sure goals will come."

Watford boss Malky Mackay:

"I am absolutely delighted that we have come away with a win, a clean sheet and a battling performance.

"Plymouth threw everything at us in the second half and a really young squad showed immense heart, courage, team effort and maturity.

"I thought in the first half an hour we were immense but perhaps should have dominated more with chances."
