Two goals by Nicky Maynard saw Bristol City inflict Middlesbrough's first defeat in the Championship.

Maynard opened the scoring in the second half when he curled a superb strike into the top right corner.

The visitors looked to have rescued a draw when Adam Johnson levelled from the spot after Louis Carey handled.

But Maynard popped up in injury time to steal all three points for the Robins - converting Paul Hartley's cross with a cool volleyed finish.

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson said:
"If we hadn't won I would have said a lot about the penalty. The ball hit Louis (Carey) on the arm and to be a penalty he had to strike the ball.

"It has been a difficult week. Today the lads showed they have the fighting spirit to make a success of the season.

"After our defeat in the Carling Cup to Carlisle the players held their own meeting to put things right."

Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate:
"As we had come back into it with a penalty, this result is very hard to take.

"We came here for a result ahead of the transfer deadline, which could see players leaving.

"I've lost Robert Huth and Tuncay to Stoke City and more could be going, and it doesn't look as if I'll have money to spend."
