Newcastle   3 - 0   Reading

By Mike Henson

A hat-trick from Shola Ameobi secured Newcastle their first win of the season with a commanding victory over Reading.

After Jonas Gutierrez had twice threatened, Ameobi made the hosts' pressure pay with a diving header.

With Reading forced further into retreat, a deep cross from Ryan Taylor picked out Ameobi for the second.

Adam Federici tipped over from yet another Ameobi header, but Shane Long's handball allowed the striker to slot home his third from the spot.

A crowd of 36,944, including current and prospective owners Mike Ashley and Barry Moat, packed into St James' Park for the Magpies' first home game since relegation.

Their loyalty was rewarded with a performance that improved from a bright start to almost total domination by the final whistle.

Kevin Nolan pass split the visitors' defence to create the first opening but just as Gutierrez seemed to have a yard on the chasing defence, the ball got caught under his feet.

The Argentine winger found himself in space again soon after but, after feinting to shoot, his actual effort was comfortably palmed over.

The breakthrough came as Sanchez Jose Enrique was allowed time to measure a superb cross in from the left flank and Ameobi's header bounced up and over Adam Federici.

With the Reading defence continuing to struggle with the bombardment from the flanks in the second half, Ryan Taylor found Ameobi with another delicious deep centre for the second.

Hal Robson-Kanu hustled Kevin Nolan out of possession in midfield before running across the face of the hosts' box and blasting well over, but it was rare foray forward for the Royals.

And as Newcastle continued to press, Ameobi confidently converted from 12 yards after Shane Long controlled a dropping ball with his outstretched arm.

Newcastle caretaker manger Chris Hughton on Shola Ameobi:
"He is a local lad and for any striker to come away with a match ball is always a very, very proud moment for them.

"What we wanted first and foremost was to win the game, and if we were able to do that by scoring goals and putting in a performance, that was certainly going to be a bonus.

"We had good periods of the game against a very, very good passing side, and the first two goals were of the highest quality."

Reading manager Brendan Rodgers:
"It's one we won't cry about. It was a great experience today here for the young players.

"Newcastle is a wonderful club with a big history and stature and it was good for my players to experience that, and we will be better."
