Sheff Wed   2 - 2   Barnsley

Barnsley hit back from two goals down to snatch an unlikely point in the opening day South Yorkshire derby.

Wednesday dominated the first half and held a two-goal lead through Jermaine Johnson and Michael Gray at half time.

Tykes teenager Jacob Butterfield buried a low drive, his first goal for the visitors, to pull one back.

Jon Macken then struck a 75th-minute equaliser, chasing down Kayode Odejayi's flick-on from a free kick, to earn Barnsley a point.

Wednesday comfortably out-played their neighbours before the break, but Simon Davey's Barnsley refused to roll over and showed plenty of fighting spirit in the second period.

Luke Steele's flying one-handed save kept out a thumping drive from James O'Connor in the ninth minute, but the Barnsley goalkeeper was beaten in front of the Tykes' travelling fans moments later.

Gray squeezed past Rob Kozluk down the right wing and his fine, deep cross was swept home at the far post by the unmarked Johnson.

Intricate passing, Wednesday's trademark on the day, set up the second goal as Marcus Tudgay's deft flick teed up Gray to head home.

But Wednesday stepped off the gas early in the second period and were punished for it, Martin Devaney's cross falling kindly for Butterfield, who kept his composure to finish past the diving Grant.

Barnsley, who had seemed dead and buried in the first half, found themselves level in the 75th minute through Macken.

Towering strike partner Odejayi headed on a long free-kick, and slack defending allowed Macken to race into the box and dispatch a firm right-footed shot into the bottom corner.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws:

"Any manager that comes in at half-time with a two-goal lead will be disappointed not to win the game.

"We set off at a really good pace and I've got to be honest I thought we looked like Real Madrid in the first half.

"We just stopped doing what we were doing in the first half and that disappointed me.

"We got sloppy with our passing and gave Barnsley an edge to push us further back and we conceded some really poor goals.

"But we had a 31,000 crowd here and at half-time they must have been rubbing their hands with delight at what they've seen out there, but then they'll probably go home really disappointed, so I hope they don't overlook the first half."

Barnsley manager Simon Davey:

"It's a shame we didn't win. I thought we had more chances that Wednesday. We could have come away with three points.

"We showed character with our second-half performance. We overpowered them and I thought we looked fitter and stronger. There was only one team going to win it.

"But 2-2 is a result after looking dead and buried."
