Derby   2 - 1   Peterborough

Gary Teale poked home a late winner to deprive Darren Ferguson's newly promoted Peterborough of a point at Nigel Clough's Derby.

Defender Miles Addison's early glancing header past Joe Lewis set the tone as Derby dominated the first half.

George Boyd's late penalty, after Shaun Batt had been needlessly brought down by goalkeeper Stephen Bywater, looked to have rescued a point for the Posh.

But Teale sealed the points from close range after a goalmouth scramble.

Derby made a bright start in the Pride Park sunshine as their manager Nigel Clough, son of Brian, and Peterborough boss Ferguson, son of Sir Alex, went head to head.

Peterborough initially repelled an early Lee Croft corner, but Paul Green's long ball back into the box was sent across goal by the head of Jake Buxton, allowing Addison to nod home with four minutes gone.

The 20-year-old, whose last goal was another header against Manchester United in last season's FA Cup, injured himself in the process of scoring but was able to continue after a brief pause for treatment.

The goal unnerved Peterborough and Derby controlled the next 20 minutes, with Green, Croft and Robbie Savage enjoying plenty of midfield possession.

Boyd turned the ball into the Derby net against the run of play in the 20th minute, but was correctly ruled a yard offside following an excellent, low cross into the six-yard box from Tommy Rowe.

Peterborough did fight their way back into the game as the half wore on, and Aaron McLean pulled a shot wide from 10 yards after clever build-up play from Boyd to release Tom Williams on the left wing.

But, after the break, Derby reasserted their authority with a series of forays forward.

Only a poor pass from Teale, gifting Gabriel Zakuani an easy clearance, prevented County scoring a second during a counter-attack straight after the break.

A period of sustained pressure followed, and Teale sent another shot fizzing left of goal from the edge of the penalty area.

However, the momentum of the game slowly turned as Peterborough began to adjust to Championship football.

A sliding Dean Moxey challenge robbed Peterborough striker Craig Mackail-Smith of the ball with the latter about to strike and, moments later, McLean sent a tame shot into the hands of Bywate.

McLean was again involved as Mackail-Smith forced Bywater to glove away a close-range cross, the keeper able to collect after McLean failed to control the rebound.

It was a moment of madness from Bywater which appeared to have gifted Peterborough a point in the 84th minute.

The goalkeeper came rushing out of goal to collect a long ball in the far corner of his area, but only succeeded in bringing down Peterborough's Shaun Batt, who had knocked the ball past him.

Boyd coolly sent Bywater the wrong way from the spot, but Derby were back in front three minutes later.

A Kris Commons corner produced a scramble in the box, involving a clearance off the line before Teale nudged the ball into the net.

Commons himself should have made it three deep into the five minutes of injury time, but Lewis saved well to limit the damage.

Derby manager Nigel Clough:

"It was a good early goal, a great header back across, and I thought for the first half an hour we played very well.

"Conceding the equaliser with five or 10 minutes to go was disappointing, but it's lovely to get that first win.

"The crowd will keep coming if we play like that and give them that sort of entertainment.

"We won't always get the right result but we're going to try to keep playing football like that."

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:

"I didn't think we deserved to lose the game after the initial 20-odd minutes, when Derby were strong and did to us what I hoped we'd do to them, in terms of outnumber us in certain areas of the pitch.

"After that we changed it, we became a lot better and got into the game gradually.

"In the second half we played like I know we can. I thought we were excellent after the break."
