Cardiff   4 - 0   Scunthorpe

Cardiff City started competitive life in their new stadium in style as Michael Chopra spearheaded a stylish Championship win over Scunthorpe.

Chopra claimed the first and third goals, first deflecting home Peter Whittingham's shot and then dummying to slide home Jay Bothroyd's back-heel.

Strike partner Bothroyd also got on the scoresheet, turning in a goal-bound shot from the excellent Joe Ledley.

Peter Whittingham added a late penalty after Chris Burke was brought down.

Also in impressive form was Ross McCormack, who was heavily involved in the first three goals.

McCormack has made it clear in pre-season that he wanted to play in his preferred central striker role and would welcome a move to a Premier League club, although he has qualified that recently by saying he is still happy at Cardiff.

But playing out on the left, where he finished last season, the Scotland international was outstanding.

The few boos that had greeted McCormack's name on the team-sheet pre-match had mostly changed to cheers by the final whistle in front of a bumper 22,264 crowd - Cardiff's highest attendance since 1971.

The only down side for Cardiff was Ledley's half-time withdrawal with an illness that has affected several of the Bluebirds' squad this week.

The visitors had started the brighter and it took two smart saves from Cardiff goalkeeper David Marshall to deny Gary Hooper and Woolford.

But Chopra's opener on 21 minutes - Whittingham's shot from the edge of the area hitting the striker and looping over helpless Scunthorpe keeper Joe Murphy - gave Cardiff the confidence to take control.

They dominated from then on, with Chopra also hitting the post before he and Bothroyd ensured Cardiff were 3-0 up by half-time.

Murphy had to save smartly from both former Newcastle and Sunderland striker Chopra and Bothroyd in the second half.

Cardiff's late fourth goal, Whittingham converting from the spot after Ian Morris had clipped Burke as he dashed in from the right flank, ensured Cardiff ended the opening afternoon top of the Championship.

Interview: Cardiff manager Dave Jones

Cardiff manager Dave Jones:

"We started a bit sloppy and could have been caught out.

"It took us 10 to 15 minutes to settle down and got a lucky goal.

"I felt after we got the goal we played some really good football.

"It's been a long time since there was 22,000 people watching Cardiff and I thought the fans deserved bug credit today."

Scunthorpe manager Nigel Adkins:
"We had an early chance and presented Cardiff with problems until they scored.

"I'm told that the second goal could have been disallowed for offside but then the third killed us.

"Today we were given a hiding but the players must respond in the right way.

"We know we need to defend much better but it would have been a big shock if we had taken anything from this game which gave our players a real welcome to the Championship."
