Roy Keane made a winning return to football management as new charges Ipswich Town spoiled Cardiff City's last league game at Ninian Park.

Cardiff should have led when Ivan Campo fouled Roger Johnson but Richard Wright saved Ross McCormack's tame penalty.

Ipswich's John Stead turned Gabor Gypes for Pablo Counago to side-foot home and then set up David Norris for a second.

Stead pounced after Campo had hit the post for a third, leaving Cardiff still needing a point to seal the play-offs.

Cardiff manager Dave Jones:

"I don't know how we lost it because the first half we've absolutely battered them, but we've got to put the ball in the back of the net.

"The penalty [miss] knocked a little bit of stuffing out of us, the first goal was a bad one to give away and the second was even worse.

"It's a good job I'm here with you on this pitch because I'm ready to absolutely flip.

"The lads are lucky they've come out [to do a lap of honour] because I wanted to really rip into them."

Ipswich manager Roy Keane:

"We had a few setbacks with one or two injuries and the penalty but the players responded well and it's just the start we wanted.

"They put us under pressure with particularly good set pieces. They are a big, strong team and we coped well with that and obviously the keeper's made a great [penalty] save which I think was the turning point in the match.

"I said to the players before the game subs have a big part to play in football and Steady came on and I think the scored one and set two up, so he will be pleased with his day's work."
