Captain Gary Monk's first goal of the season kept Swansea City's play-off hopes alive at Bristol City's expense.

Monk stole in at the near post to head Andrea Orlandi's 25th-minute corner beyond the reach of Adriano Basso.

The visitors seemed certain to equalise when Dorus De Vries could only parry Michael McIndoe's fierce shot, but Monk just beat Jamie McCombe to the rebound.

Swansea are now one point behind sixth-placed Burnley who host other promotion hopes Sheffield United on Monday night.

Swansea City manager Roberto Martinez:

"Our performance was not a hopeful performance by a team hoping to get a good result, we've learned from experience how to win games at this level.

"On the ball we did everything we needed to do to break Bristol City down and off the ball, we worked very hard to nullify their set-pieces so overall it was a complete performance and that is a great step forward for us.

"We knew how to be effective, how to control the tempo and how to defend and sense danger and that is vital - it was a very mature performance. It shows how much we have learned this year in our first season back at this level."

Bristol City manager Gary Johnson:
"It wasn't a fair result and I am very disappointed as I felt they won the game through a defensive mistake.

"We had opportunities to score but were not clinical enough in the final third.

"Swansea must believe that they can get into the play-offs but it was a very even game and they scored the vital goal."
