Wolves 0-1 Plymouth

Plymouth ended a nine-match search for a win as Paul Gallagher's overhead kick after just 39 seconds proved decisive.

Carl Fletcher could have added to the visitors' flying start before Wolves belatedly got into the game.

Argyle old boy Sylvan Ebanks-Blake ballooned high and wide with the net gaping and midfielder Dave Edwards glanced a header off target.

Substitute Sam Vokes had a late 'goal' chalked off for pushing by Wolves sub Chris Iwelumo on keeper Roman Larrieu.

Wolves are still top, despite having now one just once in the league since 20 December.

Once again, their two main rivals failed to take advantage, Reading losing at home to another of the struggling teams Nottingham Forest, while Birmingham City lost at Sheffield United on Sunday.

Victory for Argyle, who also took a point off Wolves at Home Park on the first of day of the season, lifted them five points clear of danger.

Wolves manager Mick McCarthy:
"We were hopeless, let's cut to the quick, the way we played we were hopeless and we didn't deserve anything from the game.

"I could be talking about penalty decisions, the scramble at the end - but the reality is we didn't deserve to win and Plymouth did.

"We gave them a goal, let them sit back and we didn't play well."

Plymouth manager Paul Sturrock:

"We didn't expect to score in the first 40 seconds. Over the game our goalkeeper hasn't had many saves to make and our back four and midfield did their job properly. They worked very hard.

"Now the difficult stuff starts. Instead of knocking a house down, we've got to go and build a couple.

"We've got to get the points in these next two games to kick us into the 40s and then the 50s - mid-50s is 'hallelujah land'."
