Watford's Tommy Smith scored one and made another as the Hornets moved out of the Championship relegation zone and ended Swansea's long unbeaten run.

Roberto Martinez's side went 16 games in all competitions without defeat - a run stretching back to November - but fell to two well-taken goals.

Smith sent in a low cross aimed at Don Cowie but the ball ran for Tamas Priskin who scored at the far post.

Striker Smith then drilled a half-volley from 20 yards for the winner.

Watford boss Brendan Rodgers (on moving out of the relegation zone):
"It's in our hands now and we play a lot of the teams around us.

"We are better than our position suggests and we are still improving game by game. Hopefully we will stay out of there now.

"That was terrific. It was a very good performance in the first half and tactically we were outstanding.

"They play 4-3-3 and that is a system I know well from my time at Chelsea. We matched them up and we used it well defensively and offensively."

Swansea boss Roberto Martinez:
"It was a disappointing defeat from our point of view. We never adapted to what was needed today to win a football game.

"Obviously the conditions - it was a typical night when you have to be ready for the fight in off-the-ball situations.

"You need to make sure that you sense danger well and you are solid first and foremost and today we probably put too much of our focus on the ball and once we wanted to wake up we were 2-0 down.

"I thought Watford were as you expected, had huge desire and a huge tempo."
