Barnsley 3-2 Burnley

Jon Macken and Simon Whaley celebrate Barnsley's opener

Barnsley kept a 76-year-old undefeated home record against Burnley as they weathered a late barrage at Oakwell.

Robert Kozluk's fine pass set up Jon Macken for the opener before Simon Whaley extended the lead amid Burnley protests that the player was offside.

When Diego Leon pounced on a loose ball to make it 3-0, the match looked over.

But Martin Paterson's two goals, his second following a mazy run, set up a tense finale with Barnsley goalkeeper Heinz Muller making two fine saves.

Barnsley boss Simon Davey:

"I said to the players before the game that the first 20 minutes is crucial because, if you do well in the first 20, then you don't feel tired.

"We had to juggle things around in the first 10 minutes to combat the Burnley system because they are a good side and then we got in front and went three up.

"We had a spell in the second half where we lost our concentration, gave a goal away and went on the back foot.

"There was only one team who were going to get back in it and that was Burnley and a lot of credit has to go to them.

Burnley manager Owen Coyle gave his verdict on Barnsley's disputed second goal:
"The lad took the shot and I knew during the game and I've seen it on the TV replays just now.

"The replays show he was two yards in advance of our back line and it hit Kayode Odejayi's arm as he put it in and you can't say he's not interfering with play.

"It's just a bad decision. At the time, I asked the fourth official to ask the linesman who was playing him on. And the answer I got was that his view was obscured by Burnley players but there were no Burnley players in sight of that line.

"It's a hard one to take because we certainly merited a result out of that game."
