Crystal Palace 0-0 Watford

Watford were forced to settle for a draw at Crystal Palace despite having the better chances.

Jobi McAnuff drew a superb save from home keeper Julian Speroni and John Eustace should have done better with a glorious shooting opportunity.

Lee Williamson hit the bar with a fine shot after the break and Tommy Smith also went close for the Hornets.

The Eagles' best chances saw James Scowcroft head over and Victor Moses shoot wastefully wide when well placed.

Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock:
"I thought it was just two professional sides who have cancelled each other out. I thought we look more likely to score more in the first half but they had more of the possession with the system that they played.

"You have not got to please anyone away from home so it was up to us to open them up.

"We didn't have enough guile in midfield today. I thought we were disappointing there but they swamped it with five men in there so there was not a lot of room."

Watford boss Aidy Boothroyd on his team's attempts to play a less direct brand of football:
"I wouldn't knock the long-ball game. When I first came to Watford we were a bit like Dad's Army - we needed some energy and some passion.

"But last season we lost our identity a little bit. We were neither a long-ball team nor a short-ball team, but a give-the-ball-away team.

"This year I just think we need to be a little more fluid. But it's not good being aesthetic if you don't win so we'll be careful not to get too excited.

"I thought it was a terrific start. We would have preferred three points but in terms of what we are trying to do it was very encouraging."
