Dean Windass of Hull City
Veteran striker Dean Windass scored Hull City's third goal

Hull beat Barnsley to move to second place in the Championship and deepen the Tykes' relegation worries.

Dean Marney scored a penalty after Barnsley defender Dennis Souza mistimed a challenge on Frazier Campbell.

Ian Ashbee extended their lead with a header before substitute Dean Windass struck with his first touch, shooting home with his right foot from 12 yards.

Hull's Michael Turner cleared off the line from Jon Macken while Istvan Ferenczi headed a late consolation.

Hull are now second in the Championship table, two points behind leaders West Brom, while Barnsley remain four points above the relegation zone.

  • Barnsley manager Simon Davey:
"It is very disappointing, the result is not acceptable.

"But the players have had four games in nine days and there was a lot of tired legs out there.

"We have got three games left and we need some more points - that starts at Leicester on Saturday."

  • Hull manager Phil Brown:
"The key to the game was to get in front and there was no doubt in my mind that it was a penalty.

"It was a magnificent result for us and it keeps us right in the pack. We were worthy of the win given the quality of our second-half performance.

"We knew we would go into the top two if we won and we have done that."
