Burnley capitalised on an impressive start to win away at Colchester.
Alan Mahon gave the visitors the lead when his 18-yard strike beat Dean Gerken and Andy Gray doubled the lead by volleying in Wade Elliott's cross.
Kevin Lisbie pulled one back for the hosts on the stroke of half-time with a header from George Elokobi's centre.
Gray extended the lead again from the spot after Elokobi fouled Chris McCann and although Adam Virgo headed in Teddy Sheringham's cross, Burnley held on.
Colchester manager Geraint Williams:
"All defeats are disappointing, but the nature of this one was very disappointing. We were a bit naive in our defending and it has cost us.
"We stepped off Burnley a bit, but we need to give them credit because they were worth their lead at half-time."
Burnley manager Steve Cotterill:
"I felt we played very well and I think 3-2 flattered them a bit.
"The only disappointing thing was that we did not keep a clean sheet but this has given us a boost going into the two-week break."
