Alan Lee scored twice to help get Ipswich off to a flying start at home to Sheffield Wednesday.
Ipswich went in front from the kick off when Pablo Counago was fouled by Lee Bullen and Lee scored from the spot.
Lee set up Gary Roberts to volley in a second before adding the third himself with a superb right-foot shot.
Counago finished off a cross from Jonathan Walters for the fourth before Wednesday substitute Leon Clarke grabbed a late consolation.
Ipswich Town striker Alan Lee:
"It was a great start, completely different from last year.
"We defended well and it was a shame to let a goal in at the end, but we certainly deserved the victory."
Sheffield Wednesday boss Brian Laws:
"We gifted the goals to Ipswich and it was almost kamikaze stuff.
"There were costly individual mistakes which were just not good enough.
"The only positive to come from the game was that we drew the second half.
"I have a lot of work on my hands, I wasn't expecting so many bad performances, we almost capitulated."
