QPR's revival under new boss John Gregory gathered pace as Dexter Blackstock scored against his old club.
Saints went ahead when Czech playmaker Mario Licka, making his full debut, crossed for Jermaine Wright, who superbly volleyed past Paul Jones.
QPR pulled level when Blackstock headed home after good work by Lee Cook.
Just before the break Rangers took the lead when Ray Jones embarrassed Kelvin Davis, chasing down a long clearance before rounding the keeper to score.
Southampton manager George Burley "Kelvin Davis will save us plenty of times in the future, but today he's made a mistake and it's cost us.
"We've been on a good run but that's the type of league this is and you can't afford to give goals away.
"We had a decent first half and at 1-0 we were looking like we could get three or four. But we handed a couple of goals to QPR and they took advantage."
QPR manager John Gregory declined to comment.
