Clockwatch: West Ham 1-0 Preston
All the action as it happened from the Championship play-off final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff.

Goalflashes and major incidents as they happened:

1658: FULL TIME West Ham 1-0 Preston
The Hammers play out time deep in their own territory but the final whistle relieves the tension and signals the start of the promotion party.

1656: West Ham fans are raising the roof as time ticks down on their promotion.

1655: With Preston pushing forward they have all but given up defensively. Mark Noble fails to profit and dinks an effort wide.

1651: The fourth official signal seven minutes of time still to play. Matt Hill drives a cross in from the left but Elliott Ward hooks it clear.

1649: Nigel Reo-Coker is played in by Mark Noble but his shot brings back memories of Geoff Thomas at Wembley as it curls towards the corner flag.

1647: Play resumes after a three-minute delay with Preston lining up a free-kick on the edge of the area. Stephen Bywater's first contribution is a low save from Paul McKenna's shot.

1644: Jimmy Walker comes for a high ball but lands awkwardly and falls with the ball outside his area. He is clutching his knee in agony and is stretchered off to be replaced by Stephen Bywater. Preston also make their last change, Graham Alexander replacing Youl Mawene.

1641: The game enters the final 10 minutes of normal time and there are two more changes - one each. Preston bring on Dickson Etuhu for Brian O'Neil and the Hammers swap Mark Noble for Shaun Newton.

1640: Richard Cresswell heads an Eddie Lewis cross into Jimmy Walker's arms.

1637: Eddie Lewis takes a free-kick that is more in keeping with the Millennium Stadium's home sport of rugby as it sails over the crossbar.

1634: Hammers manager Alan Pardew counters Preston's attacking change by bringing on Christian Dailly for goal hero Bobby Zamora.

1631: Lilywhites boss Billy Davies makes the first change of the game, bringing on striker Patrick Agyemang for midfielder Chris Sedgwick.

1630: Marlon Harewood meets Tomas Repka's cross in the peanlty area but his glancing header goes narrowly wide.

1627: Richard Cresswell finds himself in time and space in the area to bring down the ball, but the subsequent shot is pulled wide of Jimmy Walker's right-hand post.

1624: David Nugent, who has had a quiet game, shows his nose for goal but his shot is straight at Jimmy Walker.

1623: Preston are on the ropes and Chris Powell is denied a shooting opportunity when his powerful run in the box is blocked by Youl Mawene.

1621: Bobby Zamora wastes a golden opportunity to make it two, heading a Matthew Etherington cross high over the bar.

1617: GOAL West Ham 1-0 Preston
Bobby Zamora releases Matthew Etherington down the left and is on hand to slot home the return cross that is whipped in from the bye-line.

1611: Preston deny West Ham three times in quick succession, Carlo Nash palming a Marlon Harewood shot to Bobby Zamora who sees his effort cleared off the line by Youl Mawene. Nash gratefully falls on the ball when Harewood's subsequent shot is blocked.

1609: Richard Cresswell meets a corner but sees his header on goal cleared off the line by Shaun Newton.

1606: The action resumes with West Ham getting the ball rolling.

1547: HALF-TIME West Ham 0-0 Preston
The teams troop off still looking for that all-important and potentially priceless opening.

1546: Claude Davis almost gifts Bobby Zamora a scoring opportunity with some lackadaisical play, but makes amends with a last-ditch tackle.

1541: Chris Lucketti charges on to an Eddie Lewis corner but fails to connect properly and the ball bobbles through to Jimmy Walker.

1536: West Ham attempt to match Preston's clever work at free-kicks but it ends in a shambles as Marlon Harewood falls over.

1534: For the second time Preston work an innovative free-kick that bamboozles the Hammers rearguard, but there is still no shot on goal to show for their effort.

1530: West Ham have another free-kick in a good position, but Matthew Etherington's effort sails over the crossbar.

1529: At the other end Matthew Etherington puts in an equally inviting delivery from a dead ball but Preston head clear.

1527: After a rare foray forward, Paul McKenna delivers a tantalising corner but Elliott Ward gets a telling glance to clear it off the head of Claude Davis.

1521: Bobby Zamora plays in Matthew Etherington, but Carlo Nash is equal to the diminuitive winger's left-footed shot and parries it for a corner.

1514: Preston make a telling raid down the left with Matthew Hill and David Nugent linking well, but Hill's ball into the box is behind Richard Cresswell.

1511: Bobby Zamora goes down under a challenge from Youl Mawene as he breaks into the area, but referee Mike Riley waves away the penalty appeals.

1505: Shaun Newton plays a slide-rule pass through to the on-rushing Tomas Repka in the left-hand channel, but the Czech defender thunders a side-footed effort on to the post.

1502: Preston's Carlo Nash is the first keeper to be called upon, punching clear a flat, whipped cross from the left by Chris Powell.

1501: After the preceding pomp and circumstance, Preston get the match under way to a great roar.

1458: The stadium rises for the national anthem.

1455: The full house is still in full voice as the players are introduced to the presentation party with the plumes of smoke from the fireworks clearing.

1453 BST: The two teams walk out to an intoxicating atmosphere at the Millennium Stadium.
