Watford 3-0 Southampton
George Burley's reign as Southampton manager got off to the worst possible start with a 3-0 defeat at Watford.

Darius Henderson headed Watford ahead from Paul Devlin's cross and Clarke Carlisle bundled home the Hornets' second from close range.

Tomasz Hajto's own goal, two minutes after coming on as a half-time substitute, put the game beyond doubt.

Nathan Dyer came close to a consolation goal for Saints with an acrobatic overhead kick which struck the bar.

  • Watford boss Adrian Boothroyd:
"It was important that we laid the ghost to rest of last week when we were average and gave away a lot of silly goals.

"We played a good team with a good management team and it was a difficult game for us.

"They were obviously going to be up for it to prove to the new manager that they want to be in the team and I thought we coped very well with the start and went on to dominate the game."

  • Southampton head coach George Burley:
"The bonus today was the fans - they were absolutely magnificent.

"I got a great reception and they kept with the team from start to finish.

"I think they can see there's a lot of work to be done, and I could see there are a number of things that have got to be worked at."
