Reading came back from a goal down to deny Leeds in a high tempo game.
Teenage midfielder Simon Walton headed Frazer Richardson's deflected cross into the top left-hand corner to put the visitors ahead after 53 seconds.
Substitute Lloyd Owusu, on for the injured Shaun Goater, forced home Dave Kitson's header to draw Reading level on the stroke of half-time.
Reading winger Glen Little came closest to a winner but saw his shot turned round the post by Neil Sullivan.
Reading boss Steve Coppell
"That was a tough test for us, particularly to discover whether we could reproduce our first half form in the second half.
"Early on we did but their keeper Neil Sullivan is good at positioning himself and we couldn't get the touch or two we needed to beat him.
"I had the feeling that one long ball might isolate a defender and give them the chance of a winner. As it was, Marcus made that great save at the end to earn us a point."
Leeds boss Kevin Blackwell
"I'm pleased with the point. Reading have been together for two or three years, my team hasn't played together for two or three weeks.
"I have five players under the age of 20 and it's extremely difficult for them. Simon Walton was still at school 12 weeks ago. He got the goal, then made a glaring mistake to give the ball away.
"I won't get back to Leeds until about 4am but at 8am I will be in the office trying to get some players in."
