Burnley boss Stan Ternent has revealed he never wanted to leave the club.
"It's quite simple really, the chairman Barry Kilby and the board of directors didn't offer me a new deal," Ternent said after the 2-1 loss to Sunderland.
"It's been a rocky ride and we were good, but in the last two years we've been less than I would have hoped for.
"I said when I came I would leave the club better than I found it and I think I've done that," he added after ending his six-year tenure at the club.
It was an emotional occasion and Ternent was given a rousing reception from the Turf Moor crowd, but he refused to blame his bosses.
"I'm really pleased we did stay up because on a lighter note, if for staying up you get the bullet, for going down it could have been a public execution," he reflected.
"The chairman's been good to me and I've had a fantastic relationship with him.
"Why he has done it [not renewed Ternent's contract] only he will know and we
have to respect those reasons, or certainly I have to.

I'd like to thank the fans - they're the best in the country and have been with me through thick and thin

"I'm looking for another job. I've got a good 10 years left in me and what has happened to me has given me such a buzz, it's like an injection up the backside.
"I need a new job again tomorrow, as quickly as possible and hopefully I can
bring a team back to Turf Moor."
And Ternent praised the Burnley support.
"It's a sad day but in many ways, the reception I got at the end is something
that will live in my memory forever.
"The most important thing is Burnley Football Club. The club will be here
a long time after I'm not and there have been some fantastic players who have
played here and some fantastic people who have managed here. I consider myself very lucky."
