Teddy Sheringham set West Ham on their way to an entertaining win over Crewe, converting Luke Chadwick's pass.
Sheringham then headed home Matthew Etherington's accurate pass to double their lead before Rufus Brevett scored with a deflected shot from 35 yards.
Dean Ashton pulled one back after Kenny Lunt picked him out but the Hammers continued to press and Marlon Harewood twice hit the woodwork.
Chadwick went close before Ashton scored again to set-up a nervy finish.
Crewe manager Dario Gradi:
"We were outplayed for long periods of the game and we expect them
to finish higher than us.
"We stuck at it and although we didn't look good enough, for a spell there
they were sweating.
"They have some quality though and that makes a difference. When Teddy
Sheringham is coming on to chances like that you know he's not going to put them
over the bar.
West Ham manager Alan Pardew on Teddy Sheringham:
"Teddy put in a top-class performance. Apart from his technical ability he's a leader on the pitch in the way he talks to people and plays.
"It was really Teddy's day and he showed he still possesses fantastic
"It was great for the people at Crewe to see someone like that playing that
kind of football."
