Bradford 1-0 Coventry
A first-half goal from Dean Windass was enough to beat Coventry and end Bradford's run of five straight defeats.

A superb finish by Windass ensured that Bryan Robson's men ended the year on a high note and gave them renewed hope of avoiding relegation.

Bradford were fortunate to hang on though as Coventry were awarded a second-half penalty but saw Steve Staunton blasted his spot-kick over the crossbar.

Robson boosted his strikeforce by handing a debut to loan signing Alun Armstrong, while captain David Wetherall returned in defence for the first time since mid-October.

Coventry had the first chance of the match when Andy Morrell's left-foot shot forced a save from Bradford goalkeeper Alan Combe, who was deputising for the injured Mark Paston.

Windass shot wide with Bradford's first attempt and then saw his volley saved by former Bantams goalkeeper Gavin Ward from Armstrong's cross.

Morrell should have given the visitors the lead in the 32nd minute when he fired over from close range following Julian Joachim's cross and that miss soon proved costly as Windass broke the deadlock.

He received the ball from Paul Heckingbottom and beat Ward with a sweet left-foot shot from 20 yards for only his second goal of the season.

Ward then did well to parry Andy Gray's header as Bradford almost added a second.

The second half got off to a slow start but Combe was called into action 10 minutes after the break to keep out Courtney Pitt's shot from Yazid Mansouri's corner.

The Sky Blues were handed the perfect opportunity to equalise after 73 minutes when Mo Konjic was brought down in the area by Peter Atherton.

But Staunton blasted his penalty over the crossbar and into the top tier of the stand.

The visitors continued to press forward and Davenport headed over from Warnock's corner while substitute Patrick Suffo and Morrell both shot wide but Bradford held on.
