Ipswich 6-1 Burnley

Pablo Counago scored twice as Ipswich hit five first-half goals to sink injury-hit Burnley at Portman Road.

Jermaine Wright, Chris Bart-Williams and a Richard Chaplow own goal added to Ipswich's tally, as they moved up to seventh in the Division One table.

It was the third win in a row for Joe Royle's side who, incredibly, began the match one place behind their opponents.

On-loan Delroy Facey netted his fourth in two games for the Clarets, but Shefki Kuqi completed the rout late on.

A quiet opening to the game offered little sign of the scoring frenzy to come.

Kuqi in fact had the first chance for Ipswich after eight minutes but his shot was blocked, as was a driven free-kick from Burnley's Robert Blake.

But any pleasure visiting boss Stan Ternent felt at his side's solid start was soon buried underneath an avalanche of goals.

The score went from 0-0 to 5-0 in 20 minutes, with Counago starting the flurry with a smart finish after being set up by an Alan Mahon header.

That was with 20 minutes on the clock and two minutes later, the same combination linked up, Counago again supplying a smart finish.

The game was all but over as a contest on 27 minutes, as Jermaine Wright produced a great volleyed finish as he followed up Mahon's blocked shot.

And Ipswich piled more misery on their shell-shocked opponents as on-loan striker Chris Bart-Williams fired home after Jim Magilton's pass on the half-hour.

The goals dried up for all of 10 minutes, but Richard Chaplow's miserable evening worsened on 40 minutes as he put through his own net to make the deficit five.

Whatever Ternent said to his team at half-time reaped quick rewards as Delroy Facey finished on 49 minutes from 18 yards after Chaplow's pass.

But the home side shut up shop to ensure there was no remarkable comeback.

To their credit, Burnley were more tenacious in the second half, with Gareth Farrelly coming close, although Jim Magilton was unfortunate at the other end as his free-kick struck the woodwork.

And with the match drifting towards its conclusion, Kuqi decided to get in on the act, completing the rout in injury time.
