Coventry 1-3 Nottm Forest

Forest midfielder Andy Reid
Andy Reid celebrates putting Forest ahead at Highfield Road

Coventry scored their first goal at Highfield Road for four-and-a-half months but still lost a thrilling Midlands derby against Nottingham Forest.

Andy Reid had given Forest a 20th-minute advantage before 19-year-old Andrew Whing levelled with less than two minutes gone in the second half.

Forest hit back shortly after the hour mark when Reid lashed home a glorious effort from 25 yards and David Johnson made sure of Forest's triumph with a dazzling dribble and composed finish.

Coventry had threatened repeatedly during the early stages before Forest mounted their first attack of note, a cross from the right by Matthieu Louis-Jean directed wide of his own goal by defender Calum Davenport.

But it was only eight minutes later when the visitors took the lead against the run of play.

Marlon Harewood's pass opened up the Sky Blues along the right channel, and Reid, who had shaken off a calf injury to start the game, fired the ball inside Scott Shearer's left post from an acute angle.

Both sides emerged with unchanged personnel after the break, but the Sky Blues were the livelier and equalised almost straight away.

Andy Morrell contested possession on the edge of the Forest box and, as Michael Dawson and Danny Sonner dithered, Whing fired a left-footed effort past goalkeeper Darren Ward.

It was his first goal for the club but he was booked by referee Paul Danson after running to celebrate with fans in the Nicholls Street stand.

Coventry then poured forward in numbers, Adebola going close twice and then Morrell forcing Ward to tip a fierce drive around the post in the 53rd minute.

But Reid's sensational effort from range knocked the stuffing out of the Sky Blues and Johnson administered the killer blow, a 20-yard dribble ending with a side-footed finished past a helpless Shearer.
