Burnley 2-1 Wolves

Burnley over-turned recent form and past history to beat promotion hopefuls Wolves at Turf Moor.

Wolves had won the previous 11 meetings between the clubs - and the Clarets defence had leaked 10 goals in the previous two games.

But Burnley's rearguard looked solid from the start and Wolves could not penetrate it until the closing minutes of a game the home side dominated.

It was no surprise when Burnley took the lead after 24 minutes. Taylor started and finished a flowing move by meeting Blake's cross and planting his close-range header in the back of the net.

And Wolves, who had to replace Denis Irwin with Paul Butler after the former Manchester United defender picked up a knock, were on the rack in the 32nd minute when Dean West hammered home a 30-yard drive.

Wolves' frustration began to show after the interval as Mark Kennedy, Kevin Cooper and Marc Edworthy all received yellow cards in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Wolves boss Dave Jones threw on a third striker in the shape of George Ndah to try and bolster the attack but Burnley's defence stood firm against some sustained pressure.

Wolves gave themselves a glimmer of hope six minutes from time when Burnley failed to clear a corner and substitute Paul Butler's 20-yard shot flew into the home net courtesy of a deflection.

Burnley: Beresford, West, Gnohere, Cox, McGregor, Little, Grant, Weller, Alan Moore, Blake, Taylor. Subs: Ian Moore, Papadopoulos, Armstrong, Rasmussen, O'Neill.

Wolverhampton: Murray, Edworthy, Clyde, Lescott, Irwin, Cooper, Rae, Ince, Kennedy, Cole, Sturridge. Subs: Oakes, Butler, Cameron, Miller, Ndah.

Referee: M Messias (N Yorkshire).
