Wolves 1-0 Norwich

Wolves gained revenge for last season`s play-off semi-final defeat by recording a victory over Norwich at Molineux.

Carlton Cole, on loan from Chelsea, scored the only goal eight minutes before the break to send Wolves into sixth place in the First Division.

It could easily have been more for Wolves had Norwich goalkeeper Rob Green not pulled off a string of impressive saves.

Cole marked his home debut with the winner having come into the side at the expense of Dean Sturridge, who was only on the bench after having an injection in his back in a bid to clear up a persistent hamstring injury.

He took his chance well as he gave his new side the lead with a fine strike from the edge of the box.

Moments before Norwich came close to opening the scoring themselves with former Wolves striker Iwan Roberts seeing his header cleared off the line by Alex Rae.

Top scorer Paul McVeigh nearly gave Norwich, without a win in four games on their travels, a third-minute lead.

The Northern Ireland international picked the ball up 25 yards out and unleashed a shot which went wide of Matt Murray`s right-hand post.

Wolves could have gone ahead three minutes later when Kenny Miller struck a firm drive from just outside the penalty box, with Green making a fine block.

Green was called into action again in the 24th minute, keeping out Joleon Lescott`s left-footed shot.

Cole`s solitary strike separated the two sides at the break, with Wolves having the better of the first half.

Green, enjoying an impressive season, had his work cut out in the opening five minutes after the break.

First he was forced to punch away Kevin Cooper`s shot before denying Miller and Paul Ince.

On the hour, Miller tried his luck again but it had the same outcome as Green once more came up trumps.

It was all one-way traffic, with Norwich failing to muster a single shot at goal.

Cole was prevented from doubling his tally as Green produced yet another save.

Norwich finally had an attempt at goal but McVeigh put his effort over the crossbar.

Wolverhampton: Murray, Edworthy, Lescott, Clyde, Irwin, Cooper, Ince, Rae, Kennedy, Cole, Miller. Subs: Oakes, Butler, Cameron, Sturridge, Andrews.

Norwich: Green, Kenton, Mackay, Fleming, Drury, Nedergaard, Mulryne, Holt, Heckingbottom, McVeigh, Roberts. Subs: Nielsen, Abbey, Russell, Henderson, Crichton.

Referee: A D'Urso (Essex)
