Walsall 3-1 Grimsby

Brazilian striker Junior scored once and had a hand in two goals as Walsall sent Grimsby to a third consecutive defeat.

Junior scored his eighth goal of the season after 27 minutes only for Steve Livingstone to head home the equaliser 10 minutes later.

However, Jorge Leitao's struck against the run of play in the 66th minute and Darren Wrack fired home three minutes before the end to secure the three points.

The win helped move Colin Lee's men further away from the relegation zone.

Junior went close to giving Walsall an early lead after just five minutes.

A good cross from Wrack found the marksman on the left side of the penalty area but his speculative overhead kick was just wide.

The visitors edged their way into the contest and Livingstone brought the best out of Saddlers keeper James Walker with a fine strike from 18 yards.

But Colin Lee's men looked the more likely to break the deadlock and Junior's 25-yard effort forced Danny Coyne into making a fine save shortly before he opened the scoring with a well-worked goal.

Striker George Leitao beat a static Grimsby defence before playing in Junior who made no mistake with a crisp finish from close range.

However, the goal spurred the visitors into action and Paul Groves' men were level 10 minutes later.

Midfielder Darren Barnard whipped a delightful ball into the danger area and Livingstone angled a superb header past the helpless Walker.

Teasing ball

Stuart Campbell shot over the crossbar shortly after the interval before Campbell went even closer with a 25-yard strike that Walker acrobatically tipped around the post for a corner.

Junior then wreaked havoc on the left-hand side before finding Leitao, who calmly side-footed the ball past Coyne from 10 yards to restore their lead.

The home side should have extended their advantage after 80 minutes when Danny Sonner set up Junior, but the Brazilian spooned his close-range effort wide of the target.

But with three minutes remaining, Junior made amends for his miss with another teasing ball into the box for Wrack to seal the win with a fine strike into the top right-hand corner.
