Burnley 1-0 Nottm Forest
Lee Briscoe puts Burnley ahead against Forest
Lee Briscoe puts Burnley ahead against Forest

Burnley put a dent Nottingham Forest's promotion hopes thanks to a diving header by Lee Briscoe.

Briscoe's first half strike proved the difference between two sides committed to attack throughout.

Burnley made a bright start and Forest keeper Darren Ward was forced to tip a close-range header by Gareth Taylor round the post after good work by Glen Little.

Then Paul Weller had the ball in the Forest net but was ruled offside. Marlon Beresford was soon in action at the other end save a long-range shot by Jack Lester.

But Beresford could only stand and watch as Gareth Williams fierce volley flew over the Burnley crossbar.

Forest put the Burnley goal under pressure and Weller and Steve Davis were called on to make timely clearances.

Despite all Forest's pressure it was Burnley who took the lead after 28 minutes when Briscoe met Paul Cook's cross and dived to head home.

Briscoe was quickly in action at the other end, clearing a dangerous corner by Riccardo Scimeca.

Burnley nearly doubled their lead in the 34th minute but Robbie Blake's well-struck shot from 25 yards flashed just wide of the post.

And as the half came to a close, Little and Briscoe combined but this time Briscoe`s weak header went over the bar.

Forest, who have been beaten only once in their last ten games, started strongly in the second half but their determination earned Scimeca a booking for a foul on Blake.

And although they piled on the pressure, the Burnley defence held firm and the longer the half progressed the more the home side pushed forward.

But it was Forest who came closest to scoring but David Johnson's shot was weak and too high.

Play was end-to-end stuff and Forest almost snatched an equaliser but Scimeca`s fierce 25-yard shot was brilliantly saved by Beresford.

At the other end Ward pulled off a good save from Burnley's Taylor.

Forest manager Hart threw on striker Andrew Reid for Lester in a last-gasp effort to pull back a goal but it was Burnley who nearly broke the deadlock, but Cook's thunderous drive from 30 yards was blocked by Jim Brennan.

And Burnley almost had the last word when substitute Dimitrios Papadopoulos had a well-struck drive tipped round the post by Ward.
