Preston 3-1 Burnley

Ricardo Fuller struck twice as Preston ran out convincing winners in the derby clash with Burnley at Deepdale.

Paul McKenna was the other Preston scorer, with the visitors earlier levelling at 1-1 with a Gareth Taylor header.

The home side opened the scoring in the third minute, Fuller drilling home right-footed from 12 yards past an exposed Marlon Beresford.

Chances followed for Richard Cresswell and Chris Lucketti as Burnley failed to make any impression, but the Clarets got back on level terms against the run of play after the break.

Steve Davis crossed from the left and Taylor headed home powerfully from close range past Lucas.

It nearly went from bad to worse for North End, when Ian Moore went on a mazy dribble in the area and blasted over from six yards when it seemed easier to score.

Back came Preston, though, and on the hour they took the lead again, when Fuller pulled the ball back from the by-line for McKenna to fire home from six yards.

Burnley were almost level within a minute when Blake played in Moore, only for Lucas to make a fabulous save.

But on the hour Preston took the lead again, when Fuller pulled the ball back from the by-line for McKenna to fire home from six yards.

And when Fuller broke free down the left, cut inside and rifled a right-footed shot that flew into the top corner via a fortunate deflection off a defender, the result was beyond doubt.

Cresswell then missed a great chance to make it four when one-on-one with Beresford with time running out.

But Preston held on to deservedly grab the points against their Lancashire neighbours, and gave their fans a welcome victory to celebrate.
