Portsmouth 0-2 Leicester
Portsmouth's Paul Merson skips past Billy McKinlay of Leicester
The game was played in atrocious conditions

Leicester cut Portsmouth's lead at the top of Division One to four points as they became the first team to triumph at Fratton Park in the league this season.

Amid driving rain and howling winds, Portsmouth were blown aside by a committed and well-drilled Leicester outfit.

Micky Adams' side were good value for their win, which came courtesy of first-half goals from James Scowcroft and Matt Elliott.

Scowcroft marked his return from injury with an early opener and Elliott celebrated his 34th birthday a day late by adding a second six minutes before the break.

Adams has now seen his side lose just once in their last 15 outings, but Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp will be mildly concerned following a third defeat in six games.

Scowcroft needed just 13 minutes to make his presence felt, arriving in the penalty area to collect Paul Dickov's cross from the byline before turning and firing through Shaka Hislop's legs.

Dickov failed to find the target with a header six yards out as Leicester continued to press forward, and Callum Davidson was equally wasteful after finding himself with only Hislop to beat.

Leicester's route-one tactics may not have made the best viewing, but they were mightily effective in subduing a Portsmouth side that had lost only one league match this season.

Such was Leicester's dominance that the uninitiated could have been forgiven for thinking they were the home team, and a second goal duly arrived after 39 minutes.

Elliott's flick-on from Muzzy Izzet's corner found its way into the far corner of Hislop's net.

Nigel Quashie and Izzet traded long-range efforts after the interval, but it was a measure of the lack of goalmouth action that Brian Deane's spat with substitute Ritchie - he grabbed the Portsmouth man by the throat after a bout of shoving - was one of the highlights of the second half.

Izzet and Taylor proved they were not the only players who had brought their handbags as tensions began to spill over, while Dickov stung Hislop's palms with a long-range drive.

Portsmouth even found the elements conspiring against them, a puddle halting Mark Burchill's progress after he had rounded Ian Walker before shooting into the side netting.

Portsmouth: Hislop, De Zeeuw, Festa, Primus, Taylor, Stone, Merson, Quashie, Diabate, Todorov, Pericard.
Subs: Kawaguchi, Harper, Burchill, O'Neil, Ritchie.

Leicester: Walker, Sinclair, Taggart, Elliott, Davidson, Dickov, Izzet, McKinlay, Rogers, Deane, Scowcroft.
Subs: Summerbee, Stevenson, Stewart, Benjamin, Impey.
