Grimsby 1-1 Gillingham

A late goal from Mark Saunders cancelled out John Oster's opener and earned Gillingham a point.

The home side had the better of the early play, with Jason Brown the busier keeper.

He could only stand and watch as Steve Kabba sent a shot crashing off the crossbar in the 10th minute.

The on-loan Crystal Palace man forced a save from Brown five minutes later before Danny Coyne was called into action, tipping over a corner from David Perpetuini.

The game became niggly and Gillingham's Mamady Sidibe was booked in the 33rd minute for a foul on Jason Gavin.

Simon Ford's free-kick found Stacy Coldicott but his shot went wide of the left-hand post.

Late goals

The home side stepped up the pressure and Kabba's 18-yard shot was tipped over by Coyne.

A Livingstone shot from the resulting corner was blocked by Chris Hope, only to rebound straight back to the Grimsby man, whose second strike flew over the bar.

A Gillingham counter-attack saw Paul Shaw send a right-footed strike over the bar and Kabba had another shot blocked by Brown.

The visitors finished the half strongly and Hessenthaler and Guy Ipoua both wasted chances to put them ahead just before half-time.

The Gills could have opened the scoring five minutes into the second half but Sidibe's weak header from a Perpetuini cross went wide of the goal.

Brown was called into action again in the 60th minute, saving well from Kabba's close-range shot, and Kabba and John McDermott both missed the target with strikes from distance.

Grimsby finally broke the deadlock in the 77th minute with a quality strike from on-loan Sunderland player Oster, a left-footed strike from 18 yards out.

Gillingham battled on though and got a deserved equaliser in the last minute of normal time with an excellent header from Saunders that flew into the top-left of the goal.
