Watford 2-0 Grimsby

Watford moved up to fourth in the First Division after stretching their unbeaten league run to seven games with a hard-fought victory over struggling Grimsby at Vicarage Road.

Striker Dominic Foley, in the starting line-up with Heidar Helguson away on international duty with Iceland, took his chance by scoring the opener in the 13th minute.

Substitute Tommy Smith, who had only been on five minutes, added number two in injury time when he latched onto Jamie Hand's throughball to slot the ball past Danny Coyne and seal the three points.

For Grimsby, who thumped Ipswich in midweek, they remain second from bottom after losing for the ninth time in 13 league games.

Watford were dominant early on, and took the lead following a corner.

Ardley delivered the cross, Grimsby failed to clear their lines and Foley was on hand to tuck the ball home from close range.

Watford squandered several chances to put the game out of Grimsby's reach, but were in wasteful mood.

Grimsby threatened to pinch a point on occasion, but it was not to be for the strugglers.

But Smith's goal put the result beyond doubt as Watford preserved their unbeaten home run and climbed three places to fourth.

Watford: Chamberlain, Doyley, Dyche, Cox, Glass, Ardley, Johnson, Hand, Nielsen, Webber, Foley. Subs: Vernazza, Tommy Smith, Mahon, McNamee, Lee.

Grimsby: Coyne, Ward, Raven, Ford, Barnard, Cooke, Santos, Pouton, Campbell, Mansaram, Kabba. Subs: Coldicott, Livingstone, Robinson, Parker, Allaway.

Referee: S Tomlin (E Sussex)
