Sheff Utd 2-1 Grimsby

Midfielder Michael Tongue earned high-flying Sheffield United victory over basement boys Grimsby with a last-minute winner at Bramall Lane.

On-loan striker Paul Robinson's first goal for the Mariners and another inspired performance from goalkeeper Danny Coyne seemed set to earn the visitors their first three points of the season.

But Wayne Allison popped up with eight minutes remaining to head home a corner from Tongue, who then fired home the winner to preserve United's unbeaten home record and lift them above Norwich into third place.

The hosts made an encouraging start and nearly took the lead in the second minute.

A cross by Robert Kozluk found Carl Asaba, but the 29-year-old could not keep his close-range header down.

Hosts shock visitors

From the resulting goal kick, the ball fell to Grimsby's Wales international Darren Barnard who tried his luck from 20 yards but his effort failed to find the target.

But the visitors went ahead in the eighth minute. A pass from Stuart Campbell found Robinson, on loan from Wimbledon, who tucked home his first goal for the club.

United came close to equalising just before the half hour but Coyne again kept them at bay, this time saving from Canadian striker Paul Peschisolido.

Not for the first time this season, Coyne was in formidable form and Stuart McCall and Peschisolido were thwarted by the Mariners goalkeeper as they aimed to get back on level terms before the break.

Blades boss Neil Warnock brought on Laurens Ten Heuvel and Peter Ndlovu for Peschisolido and Asaba just after an hour to try and get back into the game.

Ndlovu and John-Paul McGovern went close and McCall saw a shot tipped round the post by Coyne.

But just when it seemed Grimsby would hold on and break their duck, Allison and Tongue denied them.
