Millwall 1-1 Ipswich

Darren Bent snatched a share of the points against a dominant Millwall side at the New Den with his first Football League goal.

Bent's equaliser grabbed a 1-1 draw from a match Millwall should have won easily.

Teenager Ben May had put them in front in the third minute with his first senior goal.

The Lions had a goal ruled offside, hit the woodwork, had two efforts cleared off the line and two tight handball appeals rejected.

May scored on just his second start for the club after Neil Harris found him all alone at the far post for a tap-in.

But Bent cancelled it out in the 54th-minute after slick interplay between Darren Ambrose and Marcus Bent.

Ipswich were coming off the back of a comprehensive 6-1 mauling of Leicester City.

By contrast, Millwall were hit for six by Rotherham on the opening day of the season.

But it was a shaky start for the visiting Tractor Boys.

Goalkeeper Andy Marshall fumbled in front of the onrushing Paul Ifill on Millwall's first attack.

And he could only parry a Tim Cahill shot from 25 yards and when Neil Harris fired in the rebound, it took a goal-line clearance from Jamie Clapham to clear the danger.

May's goal was an easy tap-in after Harris had shrugged off Clapham down the right to fire in a low cross.

Millwall had the ball in the back of the net again in the 24th minute through Cahill, but the linesman ruled his effort offside.

Late pressure

The visitors survived an almighty scare five minutes after the restart when May headed against the woodwork.

From the ensuing scramble, Harris had a close-range shot parried by Marshall, and Cahill's follow-up was cleared off the line by Clapham.

Ipswich were level moments later when Bent's blistering shot from the edge of the area beat Tony Warner.

Despite late pressure from the home side and what looked like a handball from Herman Hreidarsson in the dying moments, Ipswich clung on bravely for an unlikely point.
