Stoke 2-1 Bradford

Goals from Andy Cooke and Petur Marteinsson helped Stoke register their first win in Division One following their promotion last season.

Andy Gray scored for the Bantams close to the final whistle but it was too late for Bradford to mount any kind of serious comeback.

Cooke's opening goal - in only the fourth minute - was bizarre in the extreme.

Bradford goalkeeper Walsh - taking his time over a clearance from the edge of the penalty area - failed to spot striker Cooke on his blind side.

Cooke stole the ball from under the keeper's feet and slotted home into an empty net.

Marteinsson added to Bradford's woes after 31 minutes as the visitors' defence failed to deal with a set piece.

Teenager Kris Commons sent in a free-kick from the right which was not properly cleared.

Brynjar Gunnarsson headed on and Marteinsson, a late replacement for injured captain Peter Handyside, stooped to head home from six yards.

Gray's goal for Bradford - following a shot from the edge of the penalty area - was just reward for a spirited second-half performance by Nicky Law's team.

Striker Ashley Ward and defender Andy Tod had both gone close before Gray's goal.
