Reading 1-2 Coventry
Jamie Cureton celebrates his opening goal
Cureton (centre) scored from the penalty spot

Jay Bothroyd struck nine minutes from time as Coventry bounced back from a goal down for victory at the Madejski Stadium.

The Sky Blues had struggled to get themselves into the game as Jamie Cureton opened the scoring with a penalty after 13 minutes.

And it took the visitors another hour to level the scores, Calum Davenport atoning for conceding the penalty with an equaliser before Bothroyd sealed an unlikely victory.

Coventry player-manager Gary McAllister signalled his attacking intentions with the inclusion of Lee Hughes in the starting line-up, the striker having recovered fully from a knee injury.

It was Reading, though, who made most of the early running, and they were unfortunate not to take a second-minute lead when Martin Butler's header was cleared off the line by Mo Konjic.

Coventry responded with a McAllister effort from outside the area, before Lee Hughes saw a spectacular 30-yard effort hit the woodwork.

However, Reading made the breakthrough with Cureton's penalty.

David Thompson, McAllister and Eustace tried their luck from distance as Coventry's push for an equaliser intensified.

Their efforts were to no avail until Davenport met Youssef Safri's free-kick with a perfectly-directed header to pave the way for a stunning climax.

Bothroyd compounded Reading's misery with a neat finish from close range after good work from Hughes and Thompson.

Reading: Whitehead, Murty, Williams, Mackie, Shorey, Igoe, Hughes, Watson, Salako, Cureton, Butler.

Coventry: Hydlgaard, Shaw, Davenport, Konjic, Gordon, Safri, Thompson, McAllister, Eustace, Joachim, Hughes.

Referee: K Hill (Hertfordshire)
