Brian Deane grabbed two goals as Leicester got off to a winning start at the Walkers Stadium against Watford.

A 31,000 crowd raised the roof of the Foxes' new home as last season's Premiership basement club put their relegation woes behind them with a solid display.

Deane headed Leicester in front with a close-range header in the 47th minute from Jamie Scowcroft's cross after good work down the right by Muzzy Izzet.

55 mins: Deane scores again
85 mins: Scowcroft header hits post

Eight minutes later, the big striker escaped the Watford defence to find the net again after another Scowcroft pass.

Deane's double strike took the sting out of the Hornets' game after a first half in which they had been more than a match for the home side.

Leicester could have made it three through substitute Jordan Stewart on up front for Paul Dickov.

His run on goal ended with a curling shot which Alec Chamberlain in the visitors goal did well to save.

Scowcroft went even closer in the 85th minute when he rose well to meet Nicky Summerbee's cross only to see his header hit the inside of the post.

Watford's Neil Cox is tackled by Jamie Scowcroft.

It was much better fare than the first 45 minutes of competitive action at the Walkers Stadium in which both sides lacked creativity and chances were rare.

Defender Alan Rogers went closest for the Foxes with a curling 35-yard free kick which Chamberlain just managed to tip over on 17 minutes.

Leicester suffered a setback three minutes later when skipper Matt Elliott left the pitch injured.

His withdrawal forced a defensive re-shuffle that saw Billy McKinlay come on to join Summerbee in the host's line-up. Both are playing for nothing on a non-contract basis.
