Grimsby secured their Division One status with an emphatic victory over promotion hopefuls Burnley.

The Mariners destroyed the visitors with a wonderful first-half display, Michael Boulding scoring twice and strike partner Bradley Allen weighing in with another.

Former Sheffield Wednesday defender Lee Briscoe scored in the last minute for Burnley but it was only a consolation effort.

Grimsby stunned Stan Ternent's high-flying side by taking the lead in the fifth minute.

Boulding, who scored a superb hat-trick against Wimbledon a couple of weeks ago, collected the ball on the edge of the penalty area and drilled home a low shot.

Fierce shot

The home side quickly added a second in the 12th minute, Allen firing home from close range from Boulding's pin-point cross.

Burnley, currently sixth in the First Division, looked shell-shocked as Grimsby piled forward at every opportunity.

And Grimsby capped a brilliant first-half when Boulding fired home from 18 yards in the 43rd minute.

In the second half, former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne tried to lift his Burnley team-mates with a fierce shot which flew over the bar.

Ian Moore also went close for the visitors while Briscoe was denied by a finger-tip save before scoring in the last minute.

Grimsby: Coyne, McDermott, Todd, Groves, Chapman, Butterfield, Pouton, Coldicott, Cooke, Allen, Boulding. Subs: Ford, Croudson, Burnett, Robinson, Livingstone.

Burnley: Michopoulos, West, Davis, Gnohere, Thomas, Little, Ball, Grant, Briscoe, Ian Moore, Johnson. Subs: Armstrong, Gascoigne, Taylor, Weller, Payton.
