Nottm Forest 2-3 Walsall

Struggling Walsall gave themselves a fighting chance of avoiding relegation with a crucial win over Nottingham Forest.

Fitzroy Simpson got the Saddlers off to a flying start by slamming home a 25-yard free-kick after just three minutes, following David Prutton's foul on Don Goodman.

Forest almost equalised immediately when Marlon Harewood fired just past the post from the edge of the box.

But on 20 minutes he drew Forest level, turning sharply and taking advantage of some sloppy Walsall defending to slot home a goal.

Simpson went close for Walsall, while Michael Dawson and Adam Proudlock both spurned chances to put Forest ahead before half-time.

Dawson planted a free header from six yards straight at Walsall keeper James Walker, before Prouldock again brought the best out of Walker who launched himself to tip over a 25-yard piledriver.

Veteran striker Don Goodman headed weakly when well-placed, but Walsall went ahead in first-half injury time, with Pedro Matias' stunning volley from 18 yards giving Ward no chance.

Harewood missed a chance to level from six yards out on the hour, and Walsall made him pay.

Australian midfielder Steve Corica powered down the left and with Goodman drawing defenders away, cut inside to fire in an unstoppable shot.

Harewood provided Walsall with an uncomfortable last few minutes as he reduced the arrears from the penalty spot after Gus Uhlenbeek had fouled Jack Lester.
